Johannesburg, 23 July 2013: SAB announced the opening of the 25th annual "SAB Environmental Media & Environmentalist of the Year Awards 2013".
The competition, which aims to reward those members of the media who highlight the plight of the environment and the issues associated with it, is a highlight of the SAB calendar.
“The awards are important to us, ” says Robyn Chalmers, Head of Corporate Communications at SAB. “As a company, SAB actively implements policies which aim to help secure and protect a sustainable future for all, and this competition is a way of showing gratitude towards the green activists of our society.”
As part of the continued evolution of the competition, the Categories for 2013 have been altered. The Print (Includes all newspapers and magazines) and New Media (includes websites and blogs) categories have been separated into two individual categories respectively. The Broadcast category has been split into Radio (Radio Stations and Radio programmes) and Television (Television channels and television programmes).
The rationale for the updated categories is to allow for more scope in terms of the material submitted by the entrants.
Chalmers continues: “Last year we launched the electronic entry and judging system. This proved to be a success with entrants and judges alike, making the process more efficient and easier to use. We have continued the evolution of the awards by ensuring that our categories are relevant to the changing media landscape.”
The electronic entry and judging system means that entrants can register and upload their entries and the judges can log in, download and score. The entire system is audited to ensure it is transparent and SAB believes it will be a lot less hassle-free for all involved.
The prestigious “SAB Environmentalist of the Year” award has again been carried into the awards this year, and SAB is asking members of the public and media who are addressing, and creating awareness of, environmental issues to register on our portal and send through their nominations for the Environmentalist of the Year.

Entries for the SAB Environmental Media & Environmentalist of the Year open at 8am on 5th August 2013 and close at 5pm on Friday 6th September 2013.
Winners will be announced at an Awards Luncheon on Wednesday, 16th October 2013.
