A New Kind of Leadership

Peter F. Drucker invented the concept of "management by objectives and self-control" and has been described as the founder of modern management. He once described leadership as "lifting a person’s vision to higher sights; the raising of a person’s performance to a higher standard, the building of a personality beyond its limitations".

It seems that in recent years the idea of leadership has diminished, people no longer look to guide and assist others to achieve greatness. It has now become a case of everyone for themselves.

Mentorship is by far one of the most effective ways of displaying, evolving and enhancing leadership—not just for you but for your mentee. A leader's job is to be an outstanding role model to their followers. As a mentor, you are responsible for articulating an appealing vision of the future and inspiring your mentee to strive for that future. We aim to intellectually and emotionally stimulate our mentees by challenging them and offering them the wisdom they couldn't achieve by themselves.

So in case you had any doubts, ponder this: by following the Be The Mentor page, by deciding to take the pledge and choosing to be vocal about underage drinking you have shown yourself to be the kind of leader that this country needs. The kind of leader that is not willing to stand around and make societal issues like underage drinking somebody else's problem. The journey you have chosen is not an easy one but the path to success has never been a bed of roses either. It is vital that together we reinstall that culture of leadership into our communities, that we work together, hand in hand to build young people who are strong willed and have the right tools to make the best possible decisions about their futures.

Max De Pree, who wrote the famous best seller titled "Leadership Is An Art" says that "the signs of leadership appear primarily among the followers. Are the followers reaching their potential, are they learning? Do they change with grace? Do they achieve the required results?" It us up to us as the older and wiser generation to help young people right their wrongs and become upstanding members of society. So that is why we say:
