LOCAL UNIVERSITIES COMPETE IN 9th ANNUAL SAB BEER BREWING CHALLENGE 2016

Johannesburg.  24th August 2016. The South African Breweries’ 9th Annual SAB Intervarsity Beer Brewing Challenge will pit 15 of South Africa’s top tertiary institutions against one another in a bid to win the sought after accolade of best beer brewing students. Micro-brewing teams and their respective brews go up against each other at the final of the competition to be held on Saturday, 10th September 2016 at SAB’s Cyril Ramaphosa World of Learning in Kyalami, Johannesburg. Competing students will attempt to out-do defending champions, the University of Cape Town whose Munich Dunkel claimed the top prize in 2015. The competing universities in the 2016 challenge are:

“South Africa’s innovative and energetic tertiary student fraternity has an important part to play in our drive to build a strong culture and passion for beer in our country as there has been established in other parts of the world. It is in the halls of these institutions where experimentation is key to academic success that the foundation of a strong industry can be developed. “Providing students with the expert knowledge and skills in beer brewing by means of the SAB Intervarsity Brewing Challenge, will ensure that quality is never compromised and that South African craft beer products compete with the very best in the world, ” says Petr Vesely, SAB’s Chief Brewer. Products brewed by the students in their institutions microbreweries will be judged under the following competition sponsored categories, each carrying a prize of between R10 000 and R25 000:

  • 3 Fransen Street Best Speciality Beer
  • Hansa Pilsner Best Pilsener Light
  • Castle Milk Stout Winter Warmer
  • Best Label Design

The competition is judged by some of the beer industry’s most prominent independent and accredited craft beer tasters. SAB has over the years assisted universities in building the infrastructure of their microbreweries, where students brew, ferment, condition and package their beers prior to the final stages of the competition when they are tasted by independent and accredited craft beer tasters. This year, SAB has collaborated with two international conferences to extend awareness of craft brewing and the Intervarsity Brewing Competition. Versuchs- und Lehranstalt fuer Brauerei (VLB) in Berlin, a prominent Research and Teaching Institute for Brewing in Berlin, will host a Craft Beer Symposium in Johannesburg at Gallagher Estate, Midrand in the days after the Intervarsity event on Tuesday, 13th September. This will provide students with an opportunity to gain further knowledge of the technicalities of beer making. Furthermore, SAB will exhibit the Intervarsity Beer Challenge Programme at the Drinktech Munich Food Drink Technology Africa Conference at Gallagher Estate from Wednesday, 14th and Thursday, 15th.
