A heritage of brewing big: SAB BIG BREWING

11 Jun 15

As one of the world’s largest brewers, SABMiller has been growing its operations for over a century. We’ve been brewing beer since 1895, which makes us the oldest brewery in South Africa.

Born in the gold rush, the development of SAB is a not just the story of beer, but the story of a cast of characters whose legendary qualities of vision, talent and persistence have helped galvanise our company into what it is today.

While SABMiller today produces more than 200 beers in over 80 countries, it started off with one great beer.
We’ve been through many challenges over the years, proving ourselves to be pioneers in brewing, retailing, branding and marketing. This has been enabled by a group of talented and driven individuals: the people of SAB.

Over the years we’ve become a leading force within South Africa’s social, cultural and economic landscapes.

And we're still looking ahead.

HOPS
We started our hop farming operations in George back in the 1930’s and have been breeding our own cultivars specially adapted to the local climate. The SA hop industry is the only one in the world to be successful at low latitudes.

BARLEY
Along the way we invested in the local barley industry. This began in 1911 supplying local farmers with seed and contracting to buy the crop at market prices.
