THE FUTURE OF DAY ZERO

THE FUTURE OF DAY ZERO

Due to a 60% decrease in water consumption, Day Zero has potentially been pushed out to beyond 2018, assuming the current water savings continue and there is winter rainfall. While this is hopeful news for the city of Cape Town, SAB is committed to making sure that in the event of a total shutdown of municipal water services, the brewery can contribute to giving residents of the mother city an alternative source for this life-giving liquid.

WE WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

SAB understands the implications of ‘Day Zero’, and we are trying to do as much as we can to make a difference. In the event of ‘Day Zero’, SAB will use its own resources and financial investment to bottle and distribute about 12 million litres of water in returnable glass quart bottles to Cape Town residents.

QUARTS OF WATER

Water is a critical and scarce resource and it has become imperative that we treat it with responsibility and care. The Western Cape province has been experiencing its worst drought in over 100 years and the City of Cape Town was recently counting down to ‘Day Zero. Should this day arrive, it’s expected there will be no more municipal water and the city’s taps to many residents will be ‘switched off’. If Day Zero arrives, the public will have to collect water from designated collection points throughout the city.

HOW AND WHERE?

The 12 million bottles of water will be distributed freely and are not intended for resale. The free water will be clearly labelled as spring water to distinguish it from other beer bottles. The bottles will be distributed in cases containing 12 bottles. Newlands Brewery will be guided by the Western Cape Government regarding where the water will be distributed from.

NEWLANDS BREWERY SPRING

Public access to the spring collection point at Newlands Brewery has been open for several years. SAB believes that because Newlands Spring is a natural source of water it should be made available to and shared with the community. The brewery spring is open 24 hours for free access to the public.

IS THE WATER OF HIGH QUALITY?

SAB is working closely with The Western Cape Government to ensure our support where it’s needed.

Note: All bottles will have our customer care line printed on them should the public wish to contact us. Keep a look out on our social pages www.facebook.com/SouthAfricanBreweries for more tips on how to use water responsibly.
