Celebrating Global Be(er) Responsible Day with South Africa

On 14 September 2018, SAB and AB InBev Africa partnered with the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) to mark the organisation's annual Global Be(er) Responsible Day (GBRD), a global beer industry-wide initiative bringing people together to raise awareness about the importance of making smart drinking choices.

Working together for a better tomorrow

“Growth is never by mere chance; it is the result of forces working together.” - James Cash Penney.

To increase internal awareness of our Smart Drinking Beliefs and Global Smart Drinking Goals, and encourage colleagues to take action by pledging their commitment to Smart Drinking, we kicked off the day with pledges towards our beliefs and global goals, at various of our offices across South Africa.

AB InBev Beliefs

Among the many initiatives across SAB offices in the country, employees in Gauteng, took to the streets in partnership with JMPD and Castle Free, to hand out flyers and disposable breathalysers to motorists on William Nicol Drive in Bryanston and Maxwell Drive in Midrand, Johannesburg as a means of increasing awareness around responsible drinking behaviour.

"An increase in awareness of problem drinking has been shown to lead to a change in behaviour in terms of drinking and driving," said Ricardo Tadeu, Zone President of SAB and AB InBev Africa.

SAB is committed to helping foster a global culture of smart drinking to reduce the harmful use of alcohol and to create a better world, one where every experience with beer is a positive one. As one of South Africa’s leading corporate citizens, SAB drives high impact programmes that make a real difference in curbing underage drinking, improving responsible trading, creating awareness on Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, reducing drinking and driving, and other such campaigns.

Own your responsibility

It is critical, that every individual, exhibit responsible behaviour. Each person needs to act responsibly and know when to stop, know how to pace and make smart decisions that will ensure you don’t regret anything.

'Pacing' means that you alternate between alcohol and non-alcohol drinks, allowing for a lower intake of alcohol over longer periods, as the body is given time break down alcohol at a steady rate. The practice of pacing allows for safer and smarter drinking options.

Castle Free, for example, is an alcohol-free beer that offers consumers a real beer taste. Brewed with the same home-grown ingredients as Castle Lager, it can be enjoyed on its own, or as a pacer between alcoholic beers allowing people to socialise for longer.

AB InBev's aim is to lead the industry in contributing to the reduction of the harmful use of alcohol through our Global Smart Drinking Goals. Join us in creating a culture of smart drinking and making every experience with beer a great one.
