Beers-For-Africa Progress

Collaboration is the foundation upon which change is built. That is part of why the South African Breweries (SAB) recently partnered with Stop Hunger Now SA (SHNSA), to combat the biggest problem facing the continent; hunger. The partnership began with a goal; to feed a million students by the year 2018.

How far have they come to achieving this goal? Find out more in this blog.

The Beers-For-Africa pack, which was launched in April, is meant to signify the coming together of the different countries within the continent for the greater good. The 8-pack consists of eight of Africa’s iconic beers and is being sold for a limited time in selected retailers. The idea being that for every pack that is sold, SHNSA will receive money to provide 3 students with nutritious, wholesome meals.

Thanks to you, in just 2 months we have raised enough money to provide 200 000 university students with meals, an astonishing 20% of our targeted 2018 goal. Not only that, but our employees across South Africa have packed more than 390 000 meals as part of their Mandela Day volunteer work.

Ricardo Tadeu said: “SAB has a responsibility to invest in society and change it for the better.”  The partnership between us and SHNSA is just the beginning of implementing this change in the continent.

A cheque for R560 000 was recently handed over to the SNHSA and is expected to feed students from the University of Witwatersrand and the University of Johannesburg. As the partnership continues, we plan to feed 6-million adults and children each year. There are plans to also shift it from just one province into the rest of South Africa. Saira Khan, the CEO of SHNSA shared their plans to go into the rest of the country: “The partnership with SAB means we can expand our existing relationships to the University of KwaZulu–Natal and Tshwane University of Technology, as well as others in the Western Cape which have requested support.

It’s not too late to join the Beers-For-Africa train. Head over to your nearest liquor store, buy an 8-pack and build the future. The second phase of it will begin in October and will come with a refresh, including 8 new beers, so look out for that also. Another initiative you can be part of is SABForGood which is giving normal South Africans a chance to join SAB on its specific initiatives on the ForGood platform. This partnership will be launched in July when SAB employees will pack and distribute meals for SHNSA. For information regarding this follow SAB’s social media pages.
