Beer Finder Cape Town

Last weekend saw the second edition of our SAB Beer Finder campaign after a thrilling Gauteng edition that took place last year. The first hunt saw hundreds of people flock through the streets of a busy Jo’burg to win a year’s supply of beer, and in the end, three winners walked away with this amazing prize.

For our second edition, we headed to Cape Town to give the Mother City a chance to win beer for a year. But this time, we weren’t just giving three people the chance to win. Rather, we went live for nine straight hours and gave nine people the chance to win.

But let us not get ahead of ourselves. Let’s start at the beginning. So, what is Beer Finder? It’s all in the name really. We stream a single SAB beer at a bar somewhere in the country and post it live on Facebook. Then, it’s up to the beer lovers around SA to watch our stream, figure out where we are (with the help of our clues) and come find us. The first person to successfully find us, wins a year’s supply of beer!

Having seen a huge response in the first edition, we decided to take the hunt from the City of Gold to the Mother City and instead of sticking to three bars, we went to nine and gave nine people the chance to win!

It all began at 12pm on Saturday the 21st of October. Where? At one of the oldest bars in South Africa. A bar that has even been listed in the Guinness Book of Records for the most beer sold in the Southern Hemisphere. It was the Foresters Arms and it didn’t take long for our first beer lovers to find us. After about 20 min, Frederick Krumhoff burst through the door, and was named our very first winner.

Our second location transported us to a different time and place. A Cuban inspired paradise with a Cajun twist, it was Cape to Cuba, located at Kalk Bay. The person to find us? Jonathan Thurling came charging in at about the 40-minute mark, winning a year’s supply of SAB beer.

It was now 3pm, and time to set up at our third location. This time it was one of RondeBosch’s best kept secrets. A passionate deli-style restaurant with a passion for fresh ingredients. After just 15 min, we crowned our third winner, as Chris Oliver came sprinting down the road.

Next up, the best view in town for surfers to grab a beer and a burger; we live streamed from Tiger’s Milk restaurant from Muizenberg. But again, we weren’t there for very long when Seresha Appel stormed in, grabbed the beer right off the counter and claimed her year’s supply of SAB beer.

We had now got to the half way mark and it was time to turn up the heat. We battled the Cape Town rugby crowds and set up of live stream at the Fireman’s Arms. We thought we had put our beer in a great hiding spot, but that didn’t deter Luke Paine who became our fifth winner.

Our sixth destination was Viva! The home of wailing Mariachi music, stuffed piñatas ready for smashing, chili poppers and Cape Town’s best frozen margaritas. And our lucky winner was no other than, Devon Harrison who found us in 15 min.

Our seventh venue became a Beer Finder record! Our live video of a beautiful Cape Town sunset from Strolla bar had barely been live for 5 min, when we were found by Derrick Harrison.

At our penultimate venue, we gave our toughest clue to date. A single ostrich feather lying next to a beer in our Beer Finder sleeve. It took our audience a little longer to figure this one out, but all at once, multiple beer lovers figured it out. It was a race to the finish line, but Jovan Decker got to The Village Idiot first.

It was now 8pm and time to set up at our last venue, Tjing Tjing Rooftop Bar; a part attic in the heart of the CBD in a restored two century old heritage building. Again, we were found by an avid beer lover, Noelle van Biljon. Her broad smile showed her excitement as she claimed her prize and became our ninth and final Beer Finder winner!
